A family has lost a member.
The community of campaigning journalists in Britain has lost an inspiration and an ally. But the people around the world in most need of a champion for their various causes has lost one of the very best of them.
It is with enormous sadness that we have to remove Gavin MacFadyen’s profile from the Request Initiative roster of advisors after the announcement that he has died of lung cancer. Gavin was a constant friend and his support was game changing for us, as it was for so many. Personally, I will remember him for his unfailing humour.
His profile read as follows:
“Gavin MacFadyen, the director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism, has been a staunch ally of Request Initiative since the very beginning. Gavin has directed the International Journalism Summer Schools and The New York conference of Financial and Business Investigative Journalism. MacFadyen has investigated the CIA, Watergate and the Iraq arms trade. But he still cannot fathom how Request Initiative has been so successful.”
Susan Benn, along with the board and staff of his Centre for Investigative Journalism, has paid tribute.
“Over his lifetime Gavin was a fierce defender of justice and human rights around the world. He was a warm, caring, larger-than-life person who, as many will attest, engendered love and respect from all who met him.
“His life and how he lived it were completely in sync with the principles that he held dear and practiced as a journalist and educator – to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”
