Secrecy row over CPS redundancy payouts
The Crown Prosecution Service has risked a secrecy row after refusing to identify a senior employee handed a £623,555 redundancy payout.
The large package was among almost 1,300 handed out to lawyers and civil servants who left the CPS in the last three years.
The payment emerged following a Freedom Of Information request which revealed there was an average payout at the CPS of £48,434 between 2009 and 2012 – some £6,000 higher than the Whitehall average. Read more

Cost of policing EDL protests a ‘considerable concern’
The cost of policing English Defence League (EDL) demonstrations is causing “considerable concern”, West Midland Police’s commissioner has said.
The BBC has learned through a Freedom of Information request that policing EDL marches in England has cost more than £10m over four years.
The EDL, which was founded in 2009, protests across the UK against “radical Islam”. Read more
